Artist Statement
I have always been intrigued by the perception of time. How we experience the flow of life moving around us and just how quickly it can change. This feeling of impermanence has been a running theme of my work for years. Through my art, I try to capture a moment in time, and give the viewer the freedom to fully experience that moment before it passes.
The subject matter of my work determines the media and techniques I choose to convey this moment in time. For The Dancer Series, I use bold color and line work to create a freeze frame of the movement of the dancers’ costumes. The Nature’s Imprint series is created by using actual flowers and leaves, dipped into oil or acrylic paint and pressed onto the canvas, leaving behind the essence and fingerprint of the actual plant before it fades away. My favorite use of media to create this feeling of impermanence can be seen in my pieces featuring cloaked women. Although the backgrounds of these works are presented as solid pastel or watercolor, the women themselves are created through the use of color pencil on a textured surface which creates a grainy image that feels less solid.
Going forward, I intend to continue exploring this theme thorough various methods including different mediums, surfaces, and sizes. I want to challenge myself to connect with the viewer in the space between the tick and the tock.
